“The work will teach you how to do it.” That bit of advice came from a fortune cookie I got at a time when I had gone from newspaper page designer to magazine editor in about the blink of an eye. It must have given me some comfort at the time, because I kept it. 

During nearly 20 years in the newspaper business, I did a lot of jobs — reporter, copy editor, features editor, page designer, graphic artist, magazine editor. The work taught me well.

Today, I use all those skills as a freelance writer, editor and designer.
